Being a premed student is intense! The key word here is “balance” which is something everyone tries to achieve of course. I want to share some of the ways I try to have the best of both worlds while being premed.

Coffee Shops

There’s something about studying at a coffee shop that I obsess over. Being in a social area surrounded by others who are either enjoying a coffee with a friend, reading a book, or working on academics really motivates me while I’m studying. Here’s why coffee shops are my go-to:

Change of scenery: Sometimes, a new environment can boost my productivity. It’s a sort of refreshing change from my room or a library setting, making it more exciting.

Endless Caffeine: To be honest, a sweet cup of coffee is my best friend. Having a constant supply of caffeine within reach is great for me, although maybe not for my wallet.

Atmosphere: The relaxed vibe of a coffee shop can make my studying feel less like a requirement but more of a fun activity. This makes me feel more included in my community while still working on my projects, and you might even bump into a classmate or friend who may also be on their study grind.

Here’s some of my favorite coffee shops in my area:
📍 Hello Darling , Denver
📍 Vibe Coffee & Wine, Denver
📍 Dandy Lion Coffee, Denver
📍 Suti & Co, Boulder
📍 Jubilee Roasting Co., Aurora
📍 Milk & Honey, Denver
📍 FIKA Coffee House, Parker
📍 January Coffee, Boulder

More Tips on Balanced Lifestyle

You might think these tips are obvious, but they’ve been game-changers for me. Prioritizing these daily habits has completely turned things around for my well-being, both physically and mentally. I feel better inside and out just by making these simple adjustments to my everyday routine.

Exercise Daily: It’s important to prioritize daily movement. Even when my schedule gets busy and fitting in a workout seems impossible, I make it a point to go for a walk or practice yoga at home. I often combine morning walks with studying my flashcards, which not only gets my blood flowing but also improves my memory retention and enhances my overall physical and mental well-being. Of course tho there are days where this doesn’t happen, and that is just fine!

Take Breaks: Remember to take short breaks during study sessions. It helps with concentration and productivity.

Healthy Eating: “You are what you eat” and this is the realest statement. You need to fuel your brain with nutritious food. Eating regular meals and balancing your diet can make a big difference in your energy levels.

Sleep: My favorite activity! Just kidding. It took me years to figure out a solid sleep routine, but I’ve finally got it down. It’s seriously the best thing for your mind and body. Getting up early and knocking out the important stuff first leaves so much more time for everything else. It didn’t work for me at first, but now that I’ve got the hang of it, there’s nothing more satisfying than checking off my to-do list every day. Another tip is to avoid scrolling on your phone at night. This habit helps reset your brain and prevents it from staying active late into the night. By reducing screen time before bed, you can enjoy a more peaceful and restful sleep throughout the night.

Socialize: Now, I think this is a crucial aspect of a “balanced” life. It’s something I’m personally working on improving, but I’ve learned the value of putting yourself out there. Being open to talking to others can give you a higher social life. Don’t isolate yourself—make time to hang out with loved ones because you never know what can happen tomorrow. If friends aren’t available, family is always there, so don’t hesitate to call your mother!
